Join us for worship!

6/25/2023 Worship Service and Sermon from Brick Lane Community Church in Elverson, PA.

Worship Leader: Mike Colbert
Speaker: Steve Estes
Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:18-21
Title: God, Humans, Hatfields and McCoys

All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Notes:

A. Who were they?
B. The Civil War
C. The hog incident
D. Roseanna and Johnse
E. Other incidents

2. Our distance from God is like the Hatfields vs. McCoys in that there is real hostility from both sides
A. Hostility from humans toward God
B. God at odds with humans

3. How our distance from God is unlike the story of Hatfields and McCoys
A. H&M hated each other for the other's wickedness; humans dislike God for His righteousness
B. Because of His love, God's desire is to restore friendship with us

Benediction: To every follower of Jesus: "Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation." (Colossians 1:21-22)

To every not-yet follower: "Come! Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life." (Revelation 22:17)

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:1-8
Title: Departed Christians: What Do They Experience?
Worship Leader: TJ Waldy
Speaker: Steve Estes

For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. For we live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.

Notes:

1. Our future bodies will be far superior to our current bodies
A. Current bodies are likened to mere tents
B. Future bodies are likened to buildings
C. What we were created for
D. Applications

2. A seeming problem
A. When do we receive these bodies?
B. Until then, what do we do in the meantime?
C. Some commentators, troubled by this answer, propose some "creative" ideas

3. Solution to the problem
A. Our groaning is positive, not negative
B. Paul expresses longing, not horror, over heaven
C. Why talk about "nakedness"?
D. God's whole plan is this...

Worship Leader: Dave Stoltzfus
Speaker: Steve Midgley (Executive Director, Biblical Counselling UK)
Scripture: Philippians 2:12-18
Title: Working Out Our Salvation

Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed--not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence--continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation. Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life.

And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain. But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.

Notes:

1. Because God is in you, work out your salvation
A. How does the Christian life work?

2. Because the world is difficult, shine like stars

5/7/2023 Worship Service and Sermon from Brick Lane Community Church in Elverson, PA.

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 4:12-18
Title: Earthly Suffering, Eternal Glory
Worship Leader: Matt Lambert
Speaker: Steve Estes

So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you. [But] It is written: "I believed; therefore I have spoken." With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence. All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God. Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Notes:

4. Renewing faith is faith that our troubles actually increase our future glory
A. Your sufferings will make you more glorious
B. Your sufferings increase your future glory by making others more glorious
C. Your sufferings increase your future glory by bringing greater glory to God Himself

5. What all this glory-through-suffering will look like on the Great Day

D. All reflecting Christ's glory

4/23/23 Worship Service and Sermon: The Lord Builds the House - Psalm 127

Join us for worship!

4/23/2023 Worship Service and Sermon from Brick Lane Community Church in Elverson, PA.

Scripture: Psalm 127
Title: The Lord Builds the House
Speaker: Clint Estes

Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat--for he grants sleep to those he loves. Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one's youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court.

Notes:

1. Life is futile without the Lord
A. House
B. City
C. Children
D. Anxious toil
E. Application

2. Life is fertile with the Lord
A. Children
B. Sleep
C. Application

3. The Lord will build His house
