  • Jesus, knowing Lazarus' resurrection would deepen the disciples' faith, lovingly delayed going to Bethany

2. The Surprise of Jesus' Person

  • He renews us inwardly

  • He secures us eternally

  • He sympathizes perfectly

  • He confronts us kindly

3. The surprise of Jesus' plan

  • No mention of Lazarus' response

  • The tears of Bethany are a preview of the tears of Calvary
