
Worship Philosophy
The God whom we worship — what is he like? Two of his most notable qualities are his holiness and mercy. Because we worship at his invitation, the truth that God is both holy and merciful shapes every worship service at Brick Lane.
On one hand, God’s holiness makes us serious (Ps 96:9). The Almighty is pure beyond imagining. His power and righteousness are not to be trifled with. Therefore, our tone in worship is reverent.
On the other hand, God’s mercy makes us joyful (Eph 2:4-5, Ps 95:1). Thus, after confession, we read aloud words of pardon and raise songs of thanks for Christ’s forgiveness. At times, our hymns of gratitude almost rattle the windows.
In summary, our worship strives for a “joyful seriousness.” We are serious because God is holy. But we are joyful because he is gracious. This balance is expressed through
