Scripture: Psalm 110

Psalm 110: The Lord says to my Lord:
āSit at my right hand,
until I make your enemies your footstool.ā
The Lord sends forth from Zion
your mighty scepter.
Rule in the midst of your enemies!
Your people will offer themselves freely
on the day of your power,
in holy garments;
from the womb of the morning,
the dew of your youth will be yours.
The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind,
āYou are a priest forever
after the order of Melchizedek.ā
The Lord is at your right hand;
he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.
He will execute judgment among the nations,
filling them with corpses;
he will shatter chiefs
over the wide earth.
He will drink from the brook by the way;
therefore he will lift up his head.
Sermon Outline
1. Jesus sang this song
Matthew 22:41-46: Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, saying, āWhat do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?ā They said to him, āThe son of David.ā He said to them, āHow is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,
āāThe Lord said to my Lord,
āSit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feetāā?
If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?ā And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.
2. Peter sang this song
Acts 2:32-36,41b: This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says,
āāThe Lord said to my Lord,
āSit at my right hand,
until I make your enemies your footstool.āā
Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.ā
ā¦there were added that day about three thousand souls.
3. Hebrews sings this song
Hebrews 7:21b-25:
āThe Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind,
āYou are a priest forever.āā
This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant. The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.
