Scripture: Romans 8:28-30
February 6, 2022
Romans 8:28-30: And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

Scripture: Psalm 25
January 23, 2022
Sermon Outline
1. Psalm 25 uses chiasm (a literary device in which a sequence of ideas is presented and then repeated in reverse order)
2. Creative outline that shows the chiasm of Psalm 25 as a flight of stairs going up and then down:
D. Pardon my iniquity
(v. 11)
C. Growing confidence C. Growing confidence
(v. 8-10) (v. 12-14)
B. Wanting insight and recalling B. Still waiting in faith but with
the LORDās faithfulness increased distress
(v. 4-7) (v. 15-18)
A. Waiting on Yahweh in confident A. Waiting on Yahweh in the
trust in the face of his enemies face of his enemies
(v. 1-3) (v. 19-22)
We can also view it more like a ladder:
A. Waiting on Yahweh with confident trust in the face of his enemies (v. 1-3)
B. Wanting insight and recalling the LORD's faithfulness (v. 4-7)
C. Growing confidence (v. 8-10)
D. Pardon my iniquity (v. 11)
C. Growing confidence (v. 12-14)
B. Still waiting in faith but with increased distress (v. 15-18)

Scripture: Jonah 4
January 16, 2022
Sermon Outline
1. Literary Structure of Jonah
Jonah 1: Jonah commissioned and disobedience ā Jonah 3: Jonah recommissioned and obedience
Jonah 1b: Jonah and pagan sailors ā Jonah 3: Jonah and pagan Ninevites.
Jonah 2: Jonahās grateful prayer ā Jonah 4a: Jonahās angry prayer.
Jonah 4b: God schools Jonah in compassion.*
2. Accustomed grace: Jonahās angry prayer
3. Amazing grace: Godās gracious pursuit
His appointing is perfect
His word is persistent
His compassion is plentiful
4. Extending Grace: The authorās hanging question
āWe sing about āamazing graceā and speak of āamazing graceā, but far too often it [grace] has ceased to amaze us. Sadly, we might more truthfully sing of āaccustomed grace.ā We have lost the joy and energy that are experienced when grace seems truly amazing.ā ā Sinclair Ferguson

Scripture: Jonah 3
January 9, 2022
Jonah 3: Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, āArise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you.ā So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days' journey in breadth. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's journey. And he called out, āYet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!ā And the people of Nineveh believed God. They called for a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.
The word reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. And he issued a proclamation and published through Nineveh, āBy the decree of the king and his nobles: Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything. Let them not feed or drink water, but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them call out mightily to God. Let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. Who knows? God may turn and relent and turn from his fierce anger, so that we may not perish.ā
When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.
Sermon Outline

2. A repentant people
Their repentance is Godward
Their repentance is sincere
Their repentance is comprehensive

Scripture: Galatians 5: 22-23
January 2, 2022
Galatians 5:22-23: But the fruit of the Spirit is live, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Sermon Outline
The fruit of the Spirit is produced by God the Holy Spirit, not by us as his people
Branches (believers) have no ability to produce the fruit; they just bear the fruit that the vine (Jesus Christ) is producing through the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit doesn't just give us self-control with the snap of his fingers; He develops it in relation to other qualities, primarily the wisdom that comes from him
In the moment, at a crossroads ā heavenly wisdom directs ā self-control settles the matter

Scripture: Psalm 125
December 26, 2021
Psalm 125: āThose who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people, from this time forth and forevermore. For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest on the land allotted to the righteous, lest the righteous stretch out their hands to do wrong. Do good, O LORD, to those who are good, and to those who are upright in their hearts! But those who turn aside to their crooked ways the LORD will lead away with evildoers! Peace be upon Israel!ā
Sermon Outline
Those who trust in God are secure because God is immovable.
God surrounds the church, just as the mountains surrounded Jerusalem.
Bad rulers come and go, but the sovereign God is forever.
Pray for leaders.

Scripture: Luke 1:76-79
December 19, 2021
Sermon Outline
1. Introduction: The winter solstice helps us to enter into Zechariahās prophecy.
2. To whom is the light given?
To those who sit in darkness (v. 79).
Darkness of delusion.
Darkness of depravity.
Darkness of despondency.
To those who sit in the shadow of death (v. 79).
3. What is this light that is given?
Not just light generally but a sunrise (v. 78)
Jesus shines as light to us:
By revealing.
By reviving.
By directing.
4. For what reason is this light given?
Because of his tender mercy (v. 78).
Because he is faithful to keep his promises.
5. For what purpose is this light given?
That we might serve God (v. 74).
āWithout fear.ā
āIn holiness and righteousness.ā
āBefore him.ā
āAll our days.ā
To guide our feet into the way of peace (v. 79).
6. Application
Gratitude: We have clearer and brighter knowledge of this sunrise than the Old Testament saints did.
Focus on Godās promises.
Imitate God by showing tender mercy to others.
The light of the gospel is all-encompassing: Live all of life in fullness of life and fullness of joy.
Are you still sitting in the darkness of your sin? Repent, believe in Christ, and be saved.

Scripture: Romans 4:1-12
December 12, 2021
Romans 4:1-12: āWhat then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? āAbraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.ā Now to the one who works, his wages are counted as a gift but as his due. And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:
āBlessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin.ā (Psalm 32:1-2)
Is this blessing then only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? For we say that faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness. How then was it counted to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not after, but before he was circumcised. He received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was to make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised, so that righteousness would be counted to them as well, and to make him the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.ā
Sermon Outline
Paulās teaching style is to anticipate the Q+A; for example, āWhat about Abraham?ā
The Old Testament does not offer a different means of salvation; the entire Bible offers one single means of salvation: By grace through faith in Christ.
Paul looks at Abraham as a test case: āIf Abraham was justified by works, then you could expect boasting and entitlement. This is problematic because God is indebted to nobody.ā
Abraham was justified by trusting God, who owns everything. Abrahamās faith was counted as righteousness.
